Hello! I just wanted to hop on here and share a quick story about my day because the Lord worked in huge ways, and it’s too amazing not to share!
For a little context, my team planned a short getaway trip to Hoi An city, about a three hour drive from Hue. We stayed overnight, and the next morning, Kezia, Carley, and I (my teammate and leader) walked to a coffee shop. We ate breakfast, got coffee, and spent time alone with the Lord. As we were leaving, we see a middle-aged man with crutches moving his knee up and down, as if he was testing the pain or mobility. We walk a few more steps, and Carley stops. “I think we should pray for him.” We stand there for about three seconds looking at each other, all with the same thought, and Kezia takes the first move and marches over. She asks him his name and through google translate, we ask if we can pray over him, specifically for healing in his knee. It has long scares running down it, and Carley kneels down, Kezia and I on either side, and lays her hand on his stitched-up knee. When we finish praying, we ask how it feels and he tests it out. After putting weight on it and moving it up and down a few times (as he did when we first saw him), he looks up in shock. “Wow. Miraculous.” he says, in very broken English. He continues to walk around with a small limp and a look of awe on his face, holding out his crutches, as the three of us are laughing tears of joy. We explain that it is solely the healing power of Jesus, and Carley asks if he can try walking around without the crutches. After much hesitancy because of his limp, we pray over him again. He tests it out as he did before, and a few moments later, he hands me his crunches. He walks.
He calls for his family, and his two sisters, younger brother, grandma, and a few neighbors come outside, all with the same look of disbelief. One sister starts tearing up and the other walks over to us, wanting to know how this impossible thing has happened. Giving all glory to God, Carley tells her about Jesus Christ, the One who was sent to die for us, and who rose from the dead with the same power that healed her brother. “Do you believe it was Jesus who healed his knee?” Carley asks, and she nods. The sister translates this Gospel story to her brother, and after he mentions that he is unreligious, we google translate Romans 10:9, “because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” We pray over her and the healed man for the Lord to open their hearts to receive Christ, and after a few more minutes of prayer and conversation, we say goodbye, still giddy with pure joy and awe.
We get only to the end of the street when the grandma waves us back. We look at each other, grin, and immediately walk back. They ask if we have eaten lunch yet and kindly invite us to eat homemade Pho, a Vietnamese specialty, with them. The grandma, unable to speak any english, motions to her back, and the sister translates that her back is in pain. We pray over her, step back, and look straight into her eyes, smiling. She stares right back at us with soft, curious eyes, and in that simple but powerful moment, I prayed that all she would be seeing are Jesus’s eyes and His genuine love for her. As we finish our lunches, Kezia watercolors her a flower with Isaiah 63:3, and I write the sister a note of John 3:16, both written in Vietnamese. We pray over them one last time, give them our notes, and say our goodbyes. The grandma gives us the biggest hugs and says, “hen gap lai, see you again,” the first english phrase she said the whole morning. I walk away smiling, extremely hopeful that I truly will see her again one day.
Jesus is so real, and He is still healing. Every moment of this interaction was a testimony of His goodness and His undeniable power. He used His broken and powerless vessels to not only heal this man, but also touch the hearts of his family. “And He called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal.” Luke 9:1-2
Through our uncontrollable smiles and laughter, God showed us just a small glimpse of what heaven will look like when everyone joins together, joyfully dancing, singing, and praising in His name. I hope this is encourages you today, and I am praying that the Lord strengthens your faith more and more as you trust in Him.
